CHARLOTTE, NC.....Sweet Oreo is an 8-month-old Lab / Terrier Mix that was hit by a car. The person that hit her picked her up and immediately took her to the ER Vet in Matthews, NC that we use. Her Owners were contacted and said they would come and pick her up but they never did. Once her hold time was up, she either had to be fixed or put to sleep.
As you can see from the pictures, Oreo is the cutest pup that never complains. The Staff at CVS were determined to figure out a way to save her. Unfortunately, little Oreo was a lot like Humpty-Dumpty that had so many injuries that she required lots of Medical Care and Surgery to be put back together. We were finally contacted by some very persuasive Vet Techs to take on her Medical along with CVS to get her better.
Oreo spent a week in ICU getting prepared for surgery the following week. She had a left radius/ulna fracture (also a fractured digit on that leg, too) and bad pelvic fractures including an unstable right ilial fracture and older, unstable, crushing right distal femoral fracture (near her growth plates.) It appears Oreo had an old injury before being hit by the car on her right leg that was near her growth plates. Something traumatic had already happened to this adorable pup, and no one had gotten her the medical care she needed. Now that injury along with her new injuries was going to make repairing her rear leg nearly impossible.
Oreo needed the left radial fracture plated/screws but also needs amputation of the right pelvic limb because there are too many complicated and crushing type injuries along the weight bearing axis of her leg. It is doubtful Dr. Nanfelt could repair the leg, but even less likely Oreo would come out with a functional limb. We opted to remove the leg at the hip when the time came.
Oreo had one surgery to repair her front limb and then we had waited a week before we removed her rear limb. We also opted to wait on her Spay surgery because she already had too much going on and it was one more place for her to get an infection.
She did well during her procedures and recovered in ICU for the next week. She was not happy about walking because on top of everything else; she had a crushed pelvis which required rest. Oreo had a lot of moving parts that each required their set of instructions. One thing she needed more than anything was lots and lots of time being loved on to assure her she was going to be okay.
It has almost been a month since she was first injured and she is finally able to move around comfortably. She is still very tentative but gets up on her own and is using her repaired front limb. Oreo has another month of restricted exercise and then she should be ready to go outside and play without any restrictions. An x-ray will have to be done at that time to make sure her bone is healing and filling in. A plate is only a way to stabilize a leg while it heals but the bone still has to grow together to make the leg functional.
Oreo is one lucky pup since she was brought in immediately after her latest accident. If any time had passed, she would likely not be here now because her injuries were so severe. Oreo has lots and lots of bills because of her multiple surgeries and the time she had to stay in the hospital in ICU. PLEASE, Donate whatever you can so we can help more pups like Oreo. Hit by Car patients come into hospitals and are PTS daily because no one has the funds to help them. Oreo is one of the lucky ones that made it out alive and will soon have her Life back. We desperately need funds to pay her bills and move on to the next pup that no one else will step up for.
I know it seems like it is YOU and ME against the World saving all of these wonderful pups almost Daily but without US, pups like Oreo, Chloe and Rufus would never see the light of day, and that would be a tragedy. Thanks for being there for them and us. We greatly appreciate your Love and Support.
