CHARLOTTE, NC.......Sweet Bergie (named after our dear Dr. Bergman) is a 5-year-old Plott Hound Mix. His injuries are something we see all the time, and there is no excuse for it. He was in the back of a pick-up truck and jumped out or was knocked out from bumps and has luxated his hip. Injuries like this happen all the time in this Country, and the Owners rarely do anything about it. The animals end up in Shelters, and they are eventually euthanized because NO ONE wants to get the injury fixed. It is so sad. It doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to know this is dangerous for an animal that is not restrained in a kennel. I grew up in the Country and have seen this first hand.
We agreed to take on Bergie when the Owners refused to get him Medical Care. I knew when he arrived there was more going on than his hip had luxated. Poor pup arrived at Carolina Veterinary Specialist in Matthews, NC with a high fever and felt miserable. When the Volunteer contacted me to ask for help, I assumed the injury had recently happened. Bengie's hip had been out for quite some time and had atrophied. That does not happen in a week. It looks like he has had chronic hip issues for quite some time. God knows how many times he either fell or jumped out of a moving truck.
He is also heartworm positive. A simple pill each month can prevent heartworms. Why are people turning a blind eye to basic medical care for their loved pets? It makes no sense to me. Don't get an animal if you are not willing or can't afford to supply them with BASIC Medical Care. It seems like each dog we take in lately has to go straight to the Cardiologist for a full work-up before we can do surgery. There is no excuse for this lack of Care. I am still shocked by how many people that drive fancy cars and have big houses do not give their Family pets, Heartworm Preventative and Flea and Tick Meds. Their Pets have become Disposable, and there is no excuse for it.
Sweet Bergie is a wonderful dog that loves everyone. He acts like a Brindle Colored Lab and weighs 60 lbs. He is sweet and beautiful and is HOMELESS because his Family doesn't care enough to treat him. When we took the x-rays, we also discovered he had buckshot in his hind section where he had been shot. The buckshot was old but is still there. It is one more puzzle of the Life this sweet dog has been forced to live. Once we get rid of Bergie's Intestinal Parasites and his fever, he will be scheduled for Surgery.
This sweet pup deserves a great Family that will love him unconditionally and not discard him when he gets hurt. I am so glad he is with us because now he will be treated Medically and he will learn what unconditional LOVE is. Please, DONATE whatever you can to get Bergie well and fill out our Adoption Application if you are looking for a very Special member of the Family. Thanks for caring.
