BUCK

CHESTER, SC…….Buck is a 4 year old Pitbull that was picked up as a stray in horrible shape.    A good Samaritan picked up sweet Buck after seeing him wandering down a road.  They tried to take care of him for a week but his wounds and injuries were too much for them to stay on top of.  They called Chester County Animal Control to have him picked up so he would get proper medical care.   We were immediately contacted and agreed to take Buck in so he was not put to sleep.

We have had Buck for almost a month.   He was emaciated and covered with large wounds from living in horrible conditions.   After consulting with our Orthopedic surgeons, we have finally determined that Bucks legs are deformed because he was kept in a small kennel for a puppy and was never taken out as he grew.  All of his legs are deformed in some way.  The worst are his front legs.  The wounds on the sides of his legs are from the bones of the joints being used as the bottom of his leg because he could not stand up properly.  I cannot even imagine the horror of literally growing into a cage that became too small to even move around in.   The saddest part is that this happens daily with dogs that are in puppy mills.   They are crammed in with no regard for their safety or welfare.

We have been putting weight on Buck and have been doing lots of physical therapy to see  how much we could manipulate his bones back into place.  Unfortunately, that was not possible no matter how much the Therapist worked daily with him.  The repairing of Buck's legs has to be done in stages since all four legs have problems.    The process will begin next week.  We had to get Buck healthy enough so he could go into surgery.  He is now ready to begin the process of rebuilding his legs.   His legs will have to be broken and then set with pins and fixtures similar to Simba that can be adjusted and manipulated.   It is going to take about 6 months to get the results we will need for him to be able to walk as normally as is possible.

Buck is the sweetest boy.  I am always amazed at how an animal that has been tortured and locked away can still love and want to be around people.  Even with his horrible gaping wounds, he would let everyone work on him without a whimper.  Buck is going to make an incredible loving dog for some lucky Family.  Since Buck has to have so much surgery, he will not be placed until we are further down the road with his progress.  We will be taking applications for him now.  If we get one that is close to his Surgeon, he will possibly be able to go to his new home and go back and forth to the surgical facility when needed.  We still pick up all of his medical bills during this process if he is placed before  all of this is complete.   Anyone in the Columbia, Charleston, Bluffton, SC area, think about making this incredible dog part of your Family.  You will never regret your decision.  He can also be placed out of state, but will not be able to leave until all his surgery is done.
