ORANGEBURG, SC......Sweet four-year-old Beagle Mix was taken away from her Family when it was discovered she had a metal can that was embedded into her lower jaw that she could not remove. The Family did not remove the can or seek medical help for the sweet dog that was bleeding profusely. Animal control was called to take care of sweet Cleo. We were contacted right after she was picked up because she needed immediate medical care.
The can looks like someone intentionally did this to her. The bottom of the can had been removed, and the top part had been punched into with a triangular opener for pouring. The punched areas were all around and were embedded all around her lower jaw trapping her tongue beneath. Cleo could not eat or drink water. The Family allowed her to be that way for two days until Animal Control was contacted. We immediately had her taken to our Vets in Columbia, SC where she was sedated, and the can was cut off. The sharp edges had cut into her mouth with large cuts all the way around that had to be stitched back together.
Just writing this note leaves me speechless. What kind of person sits by while your pet is bleeding profusely and is in incredible pain and suffering. That doesn't even address the fact he will suffer from lack of food and water. Every part of this scenario is heartwrenching and disturbing on every level. I do not know how the can got there. I can't imagine how she could have done this herself. It appears someone intentionally put this on sweet Cleo. She was in such a panic that her poor mouth was torn up from trying to get it off.
Cleo is resting comfortably after her procedure and has finally calmed down. We will have more of an idea of her personality tomorrow once she has had a chance to recover from her surgery, and realize the can is gone forever. Thanks for caring and being part of her Journey to find a loving Family that will love her unconditionally.
