FAYETTEVILLE, NC.....This little puppy has one of the saddest stories. Animal Control in Cumberland County was contacted when someone found a dog carrier in the middle of an abandoned field that had a dead puppy inside. When the Officers went to investigate and brought the carrier back to the shelter what they found was horrifying and gut wrenching. inside the small carrier (that was big enough for one 12 week old puppy) were three dead puppies and one that was barely alive. It appears they were put in there when they were all alive. The one that was left would not have survived another day without immediate medical care. The one surviving puppy they named Doodle Bug. We were contacted immediately to see if we could help her. The shelter staff took her to the vet and then we sent someone to pick her up and bring her to us. When she arrived, we were shocked how sick she was. She could not even stand up. She was rushed to Emergency Care where she was immediately given life saving medical care. Her medial condition is still critical but she is stable for now. Doodle Bug is a sweet 12 week old Brindle Boxer Mix pup.
The dog carrier was spotted in a vacant field behind a Subway store in Fayetteville, NC. The Animal Control Officers checked to see if the Subway store had any surveillance cameras they could check to see who did this. They do not and do not have any clues as to anyone that would have done this. All of the puppies appear to be from the same little. Our little girl is emaciated and has every parasite known to man destroying her immune system and blood. She is borderline anemic and her albumin level is dangerously low. We have her on a Hetastarch Infusion to increase her plasma volume. She is starting to drink and to eat a tiny bit. Part of the reason she is so sick is because she has Hookworms, Coccidia & Giardia. A healthy dog has a problem with some of these and an emaciated puppy is fighting for her life with all three. We do not have any idea how long she was in the carrier with her siblings. Based on the condition she was in and the puppies that had died, it appears they were there for a while. We are still in Life-Saving mode with this adorable little girl. On top of everything else, we are having to deal with a skin condition on her feet that is causing all of her skin to peel off. We will know more once the cultures come back what is causing this. We are determined to get this little girl well, so the horror she has gone through will be a distant memory. She is being showered with lots of love and affection. She is very shy but is slowly coming out of her shell. Time, love and lots of medical care is what she needs right now to survive.
Our sweet little girl is finally turning the corner and on the mend. She was so sick when we arrived that we were not sure if she was going to make it or not. She has gotten round the clock care filled with lots of love and affection and is finally responding. The worst is over for this little Angel. Her blood work is balancing out and her kidneys are doing well. We are still working on the infections she got on her feet from the horrible conditions she was exposed to. Her feet have been peeling but are beginning to heal from the antibiotics. She is still very shy but has stated to show of glimpses of a puppy wanting to come out and play. When she barks, everyone smiles with delight because we know then she is feeling better. She has gained 5 pounds since we got her. Based on how big her feet are, we think she is going to be a big girl. She is blossoming into a beautiful dog with all of her brindle coloring coming out.
