ELIZABETHTOWN, NC........Sweet FAITH is a one year old Brindle Boxer Mix that ended up in the yard of a good Samaritan that was horrified when she saw this sweet girl. She immediately called Animal Control to come take care of an abused pup that needed emergency medical care. Another rescue in the area was called that got this sweet girl to the vet and off the streets. Poor Faith was in terrible shape. She could barely walk, was skin and bones and the wounds around her neck were horrifying. The good news was that she was alive and whatever had been around her neck was finally gone. We were contacted to see if we would help with her medical needs and eventually find her a home. We agreed to take Faith into our Medical Program to get her the best possible medical and surgical care. It has been five days since she was picked up and she is still in horrible shape. Her neck has been debrided and now shows good rose colored flesh which is exactly what we want to see. Faith’s neck wound is just one part of her medical problems. She is emaciated, anemic and loaded with parasites that are feeding on what is left of this sweet girl. She is also heartworm positive. We are going to have to get her stable before we do major surgery to repair her neck. She has such a wide raw exposed area that a lot of the tissue will have to be removed to prevent further infection. The most important thing right now is to treat her infections, parasites and to get some weight on her. I am not sure if Faith starved because she could not swallow or because no one fed her. The end result would have been the same. She would have died a horrible death and eventually choked. Thankfully she got free of whatever was wrapped around her neck. There is an on-going criminal investigation to find the person that did this to sweet Faith. Our dear girl is a beautiful dog that is gentle and loving. She allows all the nurses and doctors to work on her without any problems. She will make a wonderful addition to any Family once she is well. She is full of love and freely gives kisses whenever anyone is around her. She is being showered with lots of hugs and kisses and seems to love all the attention. Eventually, there will only be a small line around her neck that will barely be visible.
Sweet Faith is doing wonderful. She has gained a little weight and has rid her body of a lot of parasites. Her bloodwork improved enough for us to feel comfortable doing surgery on her tomorrow. She has small procedures to clean and debride her wound all during the course of the day. The natural progression of a neck wound that no longer has skin to keep it tight is to expand out. We put in small stitches around her neck on Friday that we have been using to pull the outer edges in to prepare her for surgery tomorrow. She will feel a thousand percent better once the raw skin is gone and closed up. We will then be done with all of the wound cleaning and debriding and onto regular bandage care. We suspect in two weeks she will look like a totally different dog. Our dear girl is a wonderful dog that will make a perfect family pet to be adored for a long time. She is coming out of her shell more each day. Thanks for caring and helping us with all of her medical needs.
FAITH had her neck repair on Friday and is doing wonderful.
