Foxie is a beautiful, sweet 9 month old Pointer / Fox Terrier mix that was picked up as a stray in Cumberland County, NC. She had a rope that had been tied around her mid section and was embedded so deep that it was now into her vertebrae. She was taken to animal control waiting certain death if no one stepped up for her. We were contacted by hundreds of people to see what we could do and after lots of phone calls and e-mails we were able to get her transported to a vet where she is being treated. Foxie must have known something terrible was going to happen to her if she did not get loose from wherever she had been tied up and left to fend for herself. You cannot tell from this picture but she is very thin. That is also one of the factors we believe saved her life because the rope was so thick that it was not expanding at all. If she had been any bigger she would not be here today and for sure would have been paralyzed from what we saw during surgery. We waited a week before doing surgery to get her stable and to clear up some of the terrible infection she had. She was also very weak from all of the parasites in her body. She had three hours of surgery at the beginning of the week and is slowly coming around. It turned out to be a lot more complicated than we ever imagined. The rope had been embedded for so long that it had worn off the dorsal process of her vertebrae. Right now she is scared but comfortable and very much alive. She is a wonderful dog that had a terrible life. We want to make sure the rest of her life is filled with lots of love and care. She will be up for adoption once she is well.
She has really been through it. We wanted to wait until the end of the week for her to improve before we posted an update. She is finally doing a lot better. She had four bad days but today is feeling much better. She still looks very sad but is going outside and walking around. She is off of her pain meds for now but we will put her back on if she shows any signs of being uncomfortable. She had a lot done during her surgical procedure and it is just going to take time for her to heal from having all of the dead tissue removed and then be put back together. I have put a picture of the damaged vertebrae at the bottom of this page. It is very graphic because it is during surgery. We have done lots of x-rays, etc. and it doesn't appear to be compromising her ability to walk and we feel with time it will fill itself back in. She is still very shy but coming around and likes to be loved on once she gets comfortable with you. she is not aggressive at all, just shy from not being loved on or cared for. She will make a wonderful family dog and doesn't appear to have any interest in other dogs. We will know more in a couple of weeks once she gets to run around. If you are interested in her, please fill out our adoption application from our main web page and let us know to expect it. Thanks for caring.
FOXEY is doing wonderful. It is so nice seeing her with her head lifted up and so alert. She is still very shy and will that special someone to take care of her.
Foxey is doing incredible. She has come out of her shell and loves to play with other dogs. We are still looking for that perfect forever home for our sweet girl.
