I am happy to report that sweet Hudson made through his procedure. The Specialists did not think he was even going to make it to the hospital before going onto Cardiac Arrest. It was a horrible situation for everyone. Hudson was admitted through ER and was then transferred to Cardiology where he was thoroughly evaluated. He was given two weeks to live if no surgery was done and his chances of surviving the procedure was 50%. I chose to go forward with a surgical procedure to remove the heartworms and give him the best possible chance. The Cardiologist removed 115 heartworms. That is the most they have ever removed from a dog's heart. Hudson has also been given another blood transfusion to get his blood values up. Today they are holding their own, and our dear boy is feeling much better. He is not out of the woods, but his chances are very good that he will survive this. A simple heartworm pill would have prevented all of this from happening. The best Treatment is Prevention.
Hudson will leave NC State and go back to the hospital this Saturday if he continues to improve. He is still emaciated and has to get stronger so we can treat the balance of the heartworms that did not enter into his right chamber. Hudson is being closely monitored to make sure his blood levels continue to go up and not crash again.
Hudson's bills were already high from all of the medical care he was getting. ICU, emergency heartworm extraction surgery and four transfusions have sent his bills through the roof. Any amount is greatly appreciated so we can continue with his extensive medical care to get him well. We are not sure of Hudson's exact age because he came to us in such terrible shape. One group of Doctor's thinks he is closer to two, and another group thinks he is closer to four. I think he is around three years old based on how bad his Heartworm Disease is. One thing is for sure, he is sweet and loving and will shower you with kisses. Once we get him well, he will make a wonderful member of the Family. He will be in the hospital for another month before he will be ready to go to a new home.
Think about Hudson and all the other abused animals we have that are looking for their forever homes during the Holidays. Thanks for caring and being part of his Journey to survive this horrible ordeal.
