(Sorry for the confusion. Kirby is a girl.)
COLUMBIA, SC.......Adorable Kirby was rescued when she was three months old. She was surrendered to the Shelter in Rutherfordton, NC and was scheduled to be euthanized because of her leg deformities. Another Rescue stepped up for her, so she was not PTS but soon realized her condition was not something they could take on and reached out to us. I took one look at Kirby's adorable face and her sweet personality and knew I could not turn my back on this puppy.
I immediately contacted our Orthopedic Specialists and got Kirby in. We don't know what happened to her forelimbs but were willing to do whatever it takes to make them right. The problem appears to be in her carpal area. The Specialists gave us several options to consider. We could wait and see if she would grow out of it, do surgery or get braces made for her similar to the ones we had made for Emma. We have had Kirby for several months while we got her healthy and restored her health so her legs would have the best possible chance. We waited for a month to see if her legs got better on their own. Unfortunately, they did not. Surgery was a last resort, so we opted to do lots of Physical Therapies. Sweet Kirby is the best pup because she has certainly put up with a lot from all of us manipulating her legs into their correct position. The Surgeon decided the manipulations were only temporary fixes, and she needed a permanent fix. We opted to have braces made for her, and I am happy to say, they are working. Kirby still gets lots of Physical Therapy but is now to the point where the braces have started to do their magic. Her legs are getting straighter each day and are getting strong enough to maintain their position. If you didn't know how badly deformed Kirby was, you would never know she ever had a terrible time walking. We are still open to doing surgery if her legs start to regress but for now we feel great about her progress and think she is finally able to be placed in a loving home. We are now taking applications for this amazing girl.
We originally thought Kirby was a Weimaraner Mix. We did DNA testing to confirm this, and all had a big laugh. Her test came back Staffordshire Terrier and Doberman. I even called to make sure they had not mixed her up with another dog. She still looks and acts like a Weimaraner Mix. You can decide. One thing is for sure; she is the sweetest, most delightful pup you will ever get to meet.
We are now taking donations for all of Kirby's Medical care, Physical Therapy and Braces. Her bills are not through the roof but are still quite extensive. Please, help us with her medical costs so we can help more pups like Kirby live a great Life where they can run and play without deformed limbs.
