BEAUFORT, SC.....We were contacted late Tuesday afternoon by Beaufort County Animal Control begging for help with a 7-year-old Pomeranian that had been tortured. He was brought in the day before and was with a Vet while they contacted the Family. Once the Family was found, they explained a missing dog report had been done on this sweet pup a week ago. He appears to have been electrocuted. His mouth is in horrible shape, and part of his tongue has been destroyed.
We contacted the Vet's office to make sure he could survive the trip to the ER in Charleston, SC. Dr. Cifranick was doing his best to save Lou, but he needed Critical Care and needed to go their now. Beaufort County immediately went to pick up Lou to transport to CVRC in Charleston for us.
This sweet pup has endured unimaginable pain for approximately a week based on the condition of his mouth. When he arrived, all they could do was stabilize him and get him comfortable. His body temperature was low, and his vitals were not stable but through it all, he wanted nothing but love. Lou survived the night in ICU and was stabilized. The next day Dr. Rachel Seibert sedated him so she could determine all that had happened in his mouth and what needed to happen next.
Lou was found in a ditch near the Laurel Bay Food Lion about six miles from where he lived. The best we can determine is someone stole him out of the Family's yard, or he left the yard and was picked up and tortured. Whatever happened did not happen near his home. Dr. Seibert has done her best to come up what she thinks could have happened to this sweet, sweet dog. Biting into an electrical cord would not do the kind of damage he has. A caustic substance was a possibility, but an animal is not going to do that to themselves. A third of his tongue is destroyed and dead, and part of the roof of his mouth is raw from burns along with the back area.
Lou has been unable to eat because of his injuries. We are putting in a Naso-Gastro tube so he can take in nutrients. He wants to eat but is still very uncomfortable. The fact he wants to eat is a wonderful sign for a dog that has been this way for over a week. Dr. Seibert has done her first surgery on Lou and has removed the dead front third of his tongue. She has cleaned the other areas so they can begin to granulate. At first, we thought someone had put a firecracker in Lou's mouth, but the damage from that would have been catastrophic.
Lou will have to remain in ICU while he is recovering. The day he went in, we knew he would probably not make it but wanted to give him a chance and also to get him comfortable. Lou's situation could change at any time, but for now, he is stable and comfortable and loves to give kisses with his smelly, smelly breath. Once his infection is under control, his breath will go back to normal, but for now, that is the least of our concerns.
Lou has lots of other health issues that need to be addressed from poor medical care. Those issues will be addressed once he heals from the injuries he has now. Please, DONATE toward Lou's Medical bills. He is in ICU and is Critical. We need to do everything we can to save this sweet boy. Lou could have died any time during the week he was injured. He hung on and needs to be given a chance with proper Medical Care to Survive the Abuse that was done to him.
Beaufort County Animal Control is looking for any information that could lead them to the arrest of the person that did this. Anyone that has information on an older Pomeranian Dog that had blue paint on his rear end, please contact them at 843-255-5010. Lou had recently been neutered, and someone had sprayed Farnam Wound-Kote Blue Lotion Spray Wound Dressing on him.
