Sweet Lou is still in ICU recovering. The best news is that he is starting to eat on his own. It isn't pretty because his mouth is still very sore and raw in a lot of places and food goes everywhere. The Surgical Team will sedate him tomorrow to do a thorough oral exam to make sure the oral cleaning they have been doing is sufficient. Lou is on a Fentanyl Patch to control his pain while he is healing. He appears to be comfortable but does not want anyone near his mouth, so his cleanings are quite an ordeal for the ER Staff.
ICU's primary goal was to get Lou stable before they did any further evaluation and discovery. Once he was sedated, they found he had an old wound around his neck on the Dorsal side which is on the top. We have done a lot of embedded collars over the years, and the wounds are usually on the ventral side which Lou's ER Vet also confirmed. We have Animal Control talking to the Family to see if they can shed some light on what happened to their dog months before this. The wound is healed but was a pretty significant cut based on the scar he has.
We are hoping someone will come forth that knows what happened to this sweet dog. Not being able to afford proper medical care does not make you an animal abuser. Lou has lots of Medical Issues that are from neglect. His cherry eyes will be taken care of once he has fully recovered from his mouth injuries. The Family will not be getting Lou back because he was signed over and they wanted us to give him the best possible chance of survival.
We have a very mixed bag of pups at the Rehab Facility that has each been abused and neglected in ways that most of us could never imagine. They have been run over, shot, burned, blinded and tortured and still love the embrace of a human. The unconditional Love of an animal is something the Human Race could learn from. When their Life is full of pain and suffering, they still wag their tail in hopes of a pat on the head.
Lou will not be able to come to our Rehab facility until his Surgical Team is assured we can keep him comfortable and his mouth clean. Right now, it takes several trained professionals to do his wound care. We still need Donations for this sweet boy. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Thanks for being the good in the World. We greatly appreciate your Love and continued Support.
