GOLDSBORO, NC........MILAN is a sweet little poodle that is two years old. She was picked up as a stray and taken to Animal Control in Goldsboro, NC. We were contacted because the shelter knew she was going to be PTS if no one stepped up for her immediately. The shelter originally thought she had been hit by a car and was taken to their vet for pain management and to have her leg wrapped but that was all. We stepped up for her and had her taken to our surgeons in Columbia, SC. Once she arrived she was put on pain meds to settle her down and then she was x-rayed. MILAN has 8 broken ribs and her back rear leg is broken. Five ribs on one side and three on the other are broken. From what we can tell, it appears someone intentionally did this to her. She was either kicked or stepped on by someone. We just cannot believe all the damage that was done to this little dog. How she has endured this kind of pain is a testament to her will to live. Based on the swelling of her body and the blood stains on her, it doesn’t appear she had been there very long. We got her stable over the week-end so she could have surgery today. She is in surgery now to repair the leg and to stabilize the broken ribs. I will never understand how anyone could intentionally harm an animal. You would think I would get used to it but I never will. We will post an update as soon as she is out of surgery.
Milan is finally beginning to feel better. She immediately started to feel better right after we got her and got her stabilized. After we did the surgery, she took a nose dive down and it seemed like she was never going to come out of her deep, deep depression. She did not want to stand up or even raise her head. I went to the clinic to personally see what I could do to get her out of this terrible slump. After about an hour of working with her and giving her lots and lots of kisses and hugs and talking to her, she finally for the first time raised her head up and looked at me with a totally different expression. Her eyes began to show a glimmer of faith and hope that she was safe and that no one was going to hurt her. This is the picture I took when she looked at me. Milan was so severely abused by the person that had her for so long that that is all she knows. The surgery to her was just another form of abuse and she gave up after that. I decided that what she needed most was to be surrounded by someone to love on her full time to get her through this. The problem was that she was still on heavy meds and an IV and had to be closely monitored. Our favorite vet that did her surgery, Dr. Rich Bink came to the rescue and decided to take her home with him until she came out of this. So far it seems to be working. She is up and walking around a little and is finally eating. Yea for Milan and Dr. Bink and for you for helping us with her medical care.
