BURLINGTON, NC.....Adorable Milton is a beautiful 4-month-old Pitbull Puppy with a Genetically Deformed Front Leg. He was brought into the Shelter by a Breeder that discarded him because no one wanted to pay money for him with his Deformed Limb. A lot of backyard breeders end up with puppies like this when they are not careful about the dogs that are being bred together. The saddest part of all is this adorable pup could have been euthanized like all the others that are put down because of irresponsible breeding practices. We were contacted to see if we would take the pup thy were calling ET. I said yes and changed his name immediately to Milton, which the Surgical Team picked out.
Milton's foot looks more like a claw with fur on it because it appears the middle digit did not develop, and it split the foot down the middle. We were not concerned with his appearance and only cared if the limb was hindering his ability to get around. We also looked into the possibility of joining bones together to make a more normal foot. X-Rays soon ruled out that possibility. We also discovered that the leg appeared to be longer and hindered him more than we realized. We observed him over the course of 5 days to decide if he would do better with the leg removed. During that time he was treated for skin issues and lots of parasites. The Surgeons finally determined his long-term Quality of Life would be greatly improved if the leg was removed now so he could adapt.
As you can see from the video, Milton is a typical puppy. His deformity does not stop him from getting into all sorts of trouble and playing until everyone is totally exhausted. His amputation is only going to be a minor discomfort compared to a Lifetime of Joy this Angel will have running around and playing non-stop.
We let the Shelter know we thought they should file charges against the Breeder. They should not be breeding the dogs that produced sweet Milton, and they should not be breeding and selling dogs that are not genetically sound. They said they would be doing something but only time will tell. Right now, my main concern is getting this adorable pup through his surgery and on the mend. Please, Donate whatever you can to make this possible for Milton.
