JACKSONVILLE, NC.....An urgent plea went around for a beautiful 7-year-old Flat-Coat Retriever that was going to be PTS if no one stepped up for her. All throughout the day, I kept getting the same request. I saw the same pictures everyone else saw and knew someone was going to step up for this wonderful dog. No matter what her issues were, she was an older dog that needed a place to go so she could live out her final days. It was now into the night, and the e-mails kept coming in with no one saying she was safe. To say I was disheartened was an understatement. Our Society has reached a point where an older, sweet dog with medical issues isn't wanted.
I had been talking to the Shelter, so I knew she did not have a place to go. I also let them know, we were beyond full and had so many cases in the hospital now that I did not have time to post for to raise funds. Taking on another one was out of the question, but that is exactly what I did. If this sweet dog needed a hug or a place to lay her head, then she was going to get it and was not going to die on Monday Morning.
A Driver was sent to pick up Missy and take her to an ER Hospital so she could be thoroughly evaluated and loved while we figured out what needed to be done. I knew she had some medical issues based on the note that went around with her and the picture that showed a large pendulous mass on her abdomen. The note said, "the multiple masses were the least of her worries. She has multiple hot spots, periodontal disease, a severe ear infection, an advanced upper respiratory infection requiring stronger grade antibiotics, and most likely hip dysplasias." NO PROBLEM. We are Noah's Arks Rescue, and we have seen a lot worse. What I saw beyond all of the medical issues was something that was needed more than anything else. Missy had lost her WILL to live, and she needed someone to Care. I CARE, and now I am going to turn her Life around. I have Specialists to work on the Medical issues and am going to surround her with so much Love that she is going to want to be here.
Sweet Missy was evaluated and does have a lot going on Medically. Her skin is a complete mess and would make me give up if I had to deal with that. We have already started her on Meds and Special Baths which she is learning to love. Her Upper Respiratory issues are improving with more appropriate antibiotics. We have removed her masses and are waiting for her biopsy to come back. Missy needs a TPLO or tibial-plateau-leveling osteotomy surgery which we are scheduling. Her Life has been hard which is why she has all of these issues. I do not know if Missy was a stray that was turned in or if a Family turned her in. It doesn't matter right now how she got this way. What does matter is that we have an opportunity to save her and give her a meaningful LIFE worth living.
Animals go through Hell daily with the abuse they endure. All they want is for someone to show them a small amout of love and affection. They will go without being fed, are beaten and still LOVE. I learn from them every day. Gentle natured dogs like Missy eventually give up. I saved her so she would not give up and die without knowing unconditional LOVE. Every Creature on this Earth needs some form of Love and Compassion. We are it for Missy, and you are it for us.
You are either part of the Circle of Life, or you are on a linear path that eventually dies. A Circle of Life keeps turning because of the constant Love and Compassion that is generated from within it. That is our Noah's Arks Rescue Village. YOU are our Village, and we are YOURS. I didn't create Noah's Arks Rescue to turn abused animals like Missy away. I created it to Love and Nurture them.
The next time you see a dog like Missy that has given up, reach over and let her know she is not alone. Wrap her in your arms for as long as it takes until she finally understands that she does matter. None of us is going to be on this Earth long enough to stop the abuse and save them all but for that one dog, the World will be changed forever.
