NEMO

When it rains, it pours at Noah's Arks Rescue.  It seems like we get one dog well and another one gets sick. It seems to be  revolving door for NAR dogs in ICU lately. The main problem with saving Abused Animals is that we do not have any prior history on them other than the recent abuse.  This time it seems to be sweet Nemo's turn to get sick.  We got him over the worst of his last allergy attack.  He was not having any problems and was doing his last week of living with our Trainer before going to his wonderful new home.  I got a call and several panic e-mails saying our always happy go lucky boy was not his normal self.  He suddenly became very lethargic and did not want to even walk around.  His normal hefty appetite was replaced with not wanting to eat at all.  Off to the ER in Charleston with out sweet boy.  I originally thought his ear problems had cropped up and he might have vertigo or an ear infection and that was why he was feeling so bad.  They looked at his ears and they were not the problem.  We starting doing a battery of tests and suddenly realized his liver panel was elevated 10 times what it should be.  He had either gotten into something outside that was toxic, had an unknown infection, had a liver disease that was now raising it's ugly head and the antibiotics that we had to use to get rid of his  Infection was taking it's toll on his liver.  He was put in Critical Care and they immediately started him on fluids and medications to get rid of whatever was causing this.  We sent out a battery of test to see if we were dealing with a bacteria, Leptospirosis or something else that was foreign in his system.  The Lepto test came back negative and we are still waiting for the other results.  His Liver Enzymes have started to come down but are still way too high.  He will have to remain in ICU until we feel like we have a handle on what caused his liver panel to jump so high.  We never send a dog to their new home until we feel they are healthy and can remain that way.  We have also consulted with the Dermatologist that was treating him to see if his skin allergies could be causing this.  Right now, he is improving but we are still unsure of what caused such a drastic reaction.  Nemo is an amazing dog that loves everyone.  He is always the first to come over and give you a great big lick and kiss the minute he sees you.  Everyone loves this incredible boy.  We all feel terrible since he was all set for his new Family.  He will eventually get to go there but not until we figure out what caused this.  As soon as we get the final results back and the specialist think they know what caused this, we will post an update.  For now, he has to remain in ICU.  One day in ICU is expensive.  A week long stay is SCARY.  Please, help us with his medical bills by DONATING.
