GREENVILLE, SC.....One Saturday afternoon in February, I sent a paid transporter to pick up Charity, the sweet dog that had been dragged behind a truck or car. It was late because we had just gotten the information and she needed to be out ASAP because of her wounds and the fact it was the week-end. While I was talking to the Rescue Coordinator at Greenville, she informed me that another rescue had come to pick up several puppies that were scheduled to go to her group. When she arrived, she decided to not take a little black puppy that had deformed front legs. The person knew this in advance because it was on Penelope’s description. After hearing what was going to happen to this innocent little puppy since she did not have a rescue and her time was up, I agreed to take her when we got Charity.
Penelope is a Lab / Bulldog mix that was 7 weeks old at the time and was brought in as a stray to Greenville County Animal Control. She has deformed front limbs that appear to have happened since birth. We had her evaluated by several Surgical Specialist. The results were that she would not ever be able to walk on her front legs in an upright position. She would always be stooped and crawling and eventually this condition would cause her pain and suffering and she would have to be PTS. Penelope is the sweetest little Angel that can scoot faster than most puppies can walk. She is always happy and loving and was incredible health. I decided to keep looking and to not give up on finding someone that would at least consider the possibility that her front limbs from her Ulna down could be rotated back into a more normal position so she could walk upright. After lots of research, two incredible surgeons found research where this had been done before on a young puppy and was successful. It was difficult surgery and the results were not guaranteed. In March we had our little girl operated on. It was four hours of non stop cutting and twisting to get ligaments, muscles and bones back where they needed to be for her to have any chance of ever walking again. You can see from the pictures above all the different stages she has gone through. We have literally held our breaths and prayed non-stop for almost a month now. I am happy to say, sweet Penelope has taken her first step upright in her entire life. She still has a long way to go, but her Journey is a Miracle to watch. If she never gets any better, she will be able to walk. Watch the video below and get a box of tissue. Miracles do happen. You just have to believe and never give up. Penelope never gave up on us and we never gave up on her.
PENELOPE is doing incredible. She is doing better than we expected in such a short period of time. Look at her go in this video.
