BALTIMORE, MD…..Yesterday afternoon we were contacted by BARCS in Baltimore about a 6 month old puppy that had been picked up that needed immediate medical care. PETUNIA is a six month old female pitbull puppy that was brought to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) on May 28 by a good Samaritan that found her in an alley behind Deacon Hill Court in Brooklyn. Someone had to have placed her there since she was unable to stand up or walk on her own. The shelter was calling her Deacon but we changed her name to Petunia.
We immediately put someone on the road to drive to Baltimore to pick up Petunia. She was picked up at 7:00 AM this morning and has arrived at our Speciality Vet. in Columbia, SC.
This is one of the saddest cases. BARCS originally thought her skin problem was a case of demodex that had gone terribly wrong. She does have demodex but the Vets working on her said her wounds look like she was caught on fire several weeks ago. The wounds on her face are infected tissue that do not have any skin below. All of her wounds are bleeding and weeping from the infection. I can't even imagine the pain and suffering this sweet little pup has endured. On top of everything else, she is literally skin and bones. Petunia is in critical care and will be there for quite a while recovering. It is going to take the Doctor's weeks to finally get all of the necrotic tissue removed. I don't even know how she is still alive. The pain and suffering was enough to put her body into shock. Right now, we have her comfortable and sedated so her body can begin to heal. The pain she has endured has finally stopped. For the next two weeks, she will be kept heavily medicated so she will not be in any pain from the wounds but will still be able to function and play if she feels like it.
Petunia is one strong willed little girl. Whatever someone did to her is too horrifying to even imagine. She is so darn sweet that it breaks your heart to see the shape she is in. She will be a beautiful dog once she has healed but right now she has to survive. We are in contact with all of our Specialists to make sure she is getting the best care possible given how extensive her injuries are.
Keep our little Angel in your prayers that she survives the horrible abuse that was inflicted on her. The moral compass of mankind is swinging in the wrong direction. How anyone could allow this to happen to an innocent puppy is criminal and someone should be made to account for this tragedy.
BARCS is asking the public for help on this investigation. Anyone with information about Petunia should contact Animal Control directly at 410-396-4689. Let them know she was originally called Deacon but her named was changed to Petunia.
