CAMDEN, SC...... We were contacted about a sweet dog that needed help after being hit by a car. I was sent a video of a very Neurologically impaired dog with a head tilt that was having a difficult time walking. Sweet Pibble is a three-year-old Pitbull that has had a terrible Life based on the injuries we found. He was immediately taken to the ER and was put in the care of our very special Neurologist, Dr. Bob Bergman. Pibble was evaluated and our Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Michelle Nanfelt was brought in on the case. An MRI was done to see what exactly was going on with this very special dog. From outside appearances, he had an eye injury, and he was going in circles and had a terrible head tilt, his front shoulder was damaged, the list went on and on, and he was emaciated.
The MRI came back, and the Surgeons were shocked at what they saw. Pibble was not hit by a car. He had been shot point blank in the eye with a pistol. The solid bullet entered his eye, severed his ear canal, damaged his brain stem, fractured his skull, damaged the spine, damaged the suprascapular nerve, fractured the right humerus and ended up in his shoulder. I don't even know how he is still alive, much less standing up. The part of the brain that was damaged controls balance which explains the head tilt. The list was so long that everyone had to get together to come up with a plan and work backward on the list. The first thing was to remove the damaged eye. From there we have to determine what can be done that is not going to make him worse. The bullet is in a place that we feel would do more damage if we remove it. Pibble has a long road of recovery ahead, and the surgeries have yet to be determined because of all the damaged parts.
Normally when you have an animal that has this much going on, his quality of Life is not there, and we have to say good-bye. That does not appear to be the case with this amazing dog. He is sweet and loving and very happy. He has endured incredible pain and suffering and has fought to be where he is right now. He has already done the hardest part which was to SURVIVE this horrible ordeal. I can't even imagine how much he has suffered. Pibble came across the most inhumane of Human Beings. If you are going to shoot an animal, then make sure they are dead. DO NOT injure an innocent Soul and leave them to suffer.
I am outraged with what someone did to one of the gentlest dogs you will ever meet. Pibble loves everyone and wants nothing more than to be loved. He allowed someone to put a pistol to his head and fire it. We have no way of knowing who did this unless someone comes forth since he was picked up as a stray. We offer Rewards all the time, and very few people ever come forward.
Please, DONATE whatever you can so we can give Pibble all the Rehab and Medical Care he requires to have a good Quality of Life. It is dogs like Pibble that show us there is no amount of suffering that is too great when the final reward is unconditional LOVE. If that is what Pibble hung in there for then, he hit the Lottery. We never give up or give in. If the animal is willing to fight, then we will be there every step of the way and LOVE them like they have never been loved before. Pibble shows us that Miracles do happen every day, and he is alive to tell the Story.
