COLUMBIA, SC....Trooper is a 3-year-old Border Collie Mix that was brought into the municipal shelter in Columbia after being found shot in the face. We were contacted by H.E.A.R.T. because Trooper needed immediate medical care.
Sweet Trooper was taken to our Vets in Columbia where x-rays were done, and cultures were taken. Based on the x-rays, someone intentionally shot him with a large caliber rifle from a distance and a shotgun at close range. It is a Miracle Trooper is alive based on what the x-rays show. The path of the bullet entered into the sinus cavity and left debris all the way back into the skull where it stopped. On top of this, Trooper has pellets from a shotgun all over his body.
The wound is several days old because he has a terrible infection from his injury. A culture has been sent off to make sure we are using the appropriate antibiotic for his infection. Trooper is scheduled for surgery to repair the damaged area and remove as much of the bullet debris without doing more harm. Right now he has extensive tissue damage that has compromised his sinus area. He will have to have several procedures to clean and repair the area. If a fistula develops, more surgery will be required to close the area. Right now, we are going to have to take it day by day to see how well the area heals from the surgery.
Trooper is the sweetest boy that loves everyone and loves other animals. As painful as his injuries are, he has not given us one problem. All he wants to do is give kisses and play. We think Trooper is a Border Collie mixed with Lab. Whatever the combination is, it works for this wonderful boy. He is happy and loving without a care in the World. We see sweet dogs like this shot all the time. They trust everyone, and all they want to do is play. Trooper will make a wonderful addition to any home once he has healed.
