BEAUFORT, SC...Sweet Tula is a one year old beautiful blue Pitbull that was picked up yesterday as a stray by Animal Control. On a scale of 1-10 our little girl is a one in terms of how little she weighs based on her overall size and what she should weight. Tula is using all the strength she has left to barely stand up. The worst part is that she has been starved for so long that she had begun to eat the skin off her legs. What started out as normal Demodex in a young dog soon became massive sores and infection. We at first thought she was just cleaning her wounds but we soon realized she was pulling hair and skin off to eat. Tula is the sweetest little pitbull that still thinks life is going to be okay for her. With all that has happened, she still has not given up and has done whatever she had to do to survive. Her bloodwork shows that she is anemic and loaded with parasites. We have sent cultures out to see what kind of infection we are dealing with so we can treat her appropriately. We have to slowly add lots of small portions of food daily so her internal organs will not shut down from the stress of having food added too quickly. Once an animals body begins to shut down it goes through a lot of clinical changes that prevent it from eating food and processing it. We are taking every precaution to make sure we slowly wake up the organs that need to function for her to ingest food. Our little pup is one of many we have seen like this over the last month. The suffering these animals endure and survive is unbelievable. Tula will be in the hospital for as long as it takes to get her well. Once she is well, she will be placed in a loving home.
Sweet TULA has been healing and putting weight on for the last two weeks since we rescued her. She is a wonderful blue pit that loves everyone. Her infections have begun to go away and her skin is not the hot mess it was when she first arrived. Now that she is finally getting the nourishment she has needed for so long, she has stopped chewing on her legs. It had become part of her daily life to survive and to rid her body of the infection. As you can see from the pictures, she still has a lot of weight to put back on. The good part is that she is happy and finally comfortable with all of her skin issues. Our sweet girl has made leaps and bounds over where she was when she arrived. Thanks for caring about her and helping us with her recovery.
Sweet TULA is starting to feel a lot better. Her skin is not raw and red like it was in the beginning and she has gained 8 pounds since we rescued her. She is one of the sweetest dogs and loves everyone. She is pretty now but is going to be beautiful once she has filled out.
