FAYETTEVILLE, NC.....We were contacted late yesterday evening to help a four-year-old Bassett Hound / Lab Mix that had been viciously attacked by another dog. Winston's wounds were covered with maggots when he was found which means he has been this way for several days suffering. It was late in the day, but we knew this sweet pup needed to go to an Emergency Care Hospital. We put our transporter on the road, and Winston arrived late last night at CVRC (Charleston Veterinary Referral Center) where we knew he would get immediate ER care and be placed in ICU. We assumed Winston's attack was random until he arrived, and it was discovered he was covered with old wounds all over his ears in addition to fresh ones. It is hard to imagine someone using this sweet, sweet dog as Bait, but it appears that is likely what has happened.
We have not had time to get back all of the tests that were run during the night but will post the findings in a couple of days. Right now, our main concern is the nasty infection Winston has and saving as much of his ear as possible. As you can see from the pictures, his ear flaps are gnarled and tough from all of the old wounds. His ears are also infected which is affecting his hearing.
Winston is in shock but is still as sweet as can be. You can tell from the pictures that he is just numb to all that has happened to him. Right now, he is on pain meds and is resting comfortably. We will be able to access his situation better once his pain is under control to make sure he does not have any other injuries. Thanks for caring and being part of his Journey to Survive and Thrive.
